Installing A Key Safe For The Elderly

Posted in Home Accessories

If you are looking to increase security and increase ease of access to an elderly relative’s home then you should think about installing a key safe. Electronic or digital key safes are especially recommended because it is all done with the ease of a touch pad, which is great for the elderly people themselves. Also mini safes can have new pass codes entered at any time should there ever be a need to alter the code. It’s not just for emergencies, but also for such simple things as trusted home maintenance workers who may need access to a certain area of the home without need to trouble an elderly person who may be resting. There are also those who may deliver groceries or come to clean while an elderly person may be bathing, resting or out for a walk. All these things are easily accommodated by having a keysafe that allows those who need to access a home the ease to do so without disturbing the homeowners or elderly tenants.

Features of the Safe

Here are some of the features of the high security key safe by Masters: The storage is large enough for 5 house keys or car keys or even a few small padlock keys. The combination can be reset at any time and the code is decided by you so it’s easy to remember. The actual safe is reinforced and sturdy enough to resist pounding with a hammer or sawing and the unit is weather resistant even for cold and rain and sun. Everything needed to attach it to a wall or secreted area comes with the unit when purchased. The box is not an eyesore but an attractive little box with a digital panel much like any security panel you may already have. The best part is these key safes for the elderly are really affordable and offer a lot of peace of mind.

Peace of Mind

Instead of hiding keys in strange places that are not secure, and instead of fretting about how many people in the neighborhood have keys to an elderly parent’s home, get relief with high security key safe boxes that are specifically designed for ease and comfortable access to the homes of elderly people you love.

Convection Microwave Ovens

Posted in Home Accessories

Convection microwave ovens are one the great appliances of our day because they combine inovative technology into a small easy to use space. They allow you to use the extremely fast and easy to use microwave feature to reheat and cook foods right along with the more traditional and, in my opinion, more effective convection feature. The versatility of this small kitchen appliance is really great because it can be a literal life saver for college students, busy professionals and large families a like.

For the college student these appliances are perfect because they’re fast and easy and you don’t have to compromise quality when you have the convection feature built right into it. You might think that the convection side would take a while but infact it goes very fast because the space to heat is a lot smaller than a regular sized oven. I routinely cook (or try to cook) more gourmet style dishes for one with my convection oven and it cuts the cooking time in half because you dont have to wait for it to preheat really. Maybe 2 minutes max.

Families also can put convection microwave ovens to good use. When you’re making a large meal for the family or get together then you can easily use the appliance as a way to keep food warm while you wait for other dishes to get done cooking. This is perfect so you don’t have to have any cold food at the dinner table. Also for families having a built in convection microwave oven is a great help because it makes more space on your counters. These obviously cost a little more but can be classy and well worth the extra money.

Microwave convection ovens are great solutions for many cooking problems that come whether you’re a starving college student or busy homemaker.

Installing Attic Insulation

Posted in DIY

Attic insulation is a necessity if you want to save on heating bills. If you do not have any type of insulation in your attic then you will be losing around 15% of your heating, which can amount to a considerable loss of the course of a few years. The most common forms of loft insulation are fibre glass and mineral fibre. Both of these come in large rolls and they work by trapping air between the fibres to stop it rising and escaping. The rolls are usually 4 to 6 inches thick and around 16 inches wide. The reason is because this is the standard distance between ceiling joists in most homes. Most home stores will stock these rolls or other retailers like argos online have a good selection at affordable prices.

If you going to install the insulation yourself then first clear out anything stored in the loft such as unwanted rubbish or old bits and pieces that have found their way up there. You will need to stand in the loft so get a piece of wood at least long enough to cover the width of 3 joists The joists are not meant to carry weight, so make sure you are safe. Ventilation is also important, and you should have small gaps where the eaves meet the roof. You do not want to cover these gaps with the insulation or you will create condensation.

Remember to wear protective clothing as the fibres are very irritating to the skin and eyes. Roll out the insulation and make sure you get it into the areas between the joists and right up to the eaves. You want the depth to be around 20cms, so it may need two or three levels building up. Move all power cables on top of the insulation. If you cover them they can become too hot and will be a fire hazard. You can get more specific details on installation from argos or from some of the many home improvement web sites on the internet. The advice is also free and easy to follow.

You can hire professional services if you want loose fill insulation which is blown into the loft. Rockwool is the usually choice for blown insulation and has the added bonus of being very soundproof. It also has slightly better insulation properties, although it is more expensive.

Three Tips For Solving Area Rugs Problems

Posted in Home Accessories

Area rugs are very popular and even increasing in popularity as we see new designs emerge. Most people choose a traditional rectangular oriental rug, or a more contemporary round rug, but some rug problems are intrinsic to all rugs regardless of shape, materials, or design.

Three problems that most people encounter with area rugs are fluffing when a rug is new, having wax drip stuck into the fibers, and edges that curl up. All three of this problems are common but can be solved easily and inexpensively.

All new rugs even those of excellent quality lose fibers in the first months that we use them. This is called fluffing and is completely normal. The process should not be rushed by brushing the rug excessively, as this can damage it. Instead vacuum the area rug once a week, with a non brushing vacuum. Sometimes fluffing can occur in poor quality rugs and continue after the first few months. Depending on the amount you paid for the rug, if you spent a lot of money and the problem does occur, it is reason enough to return the rug for an exchange.

Another problem people frequently encounter is a candle that dripped onto the rug. This is bound to happen to anyone at anytime.
There is a fairly easy process that works well to remove melted wax from your rug. Use a clothes iron and a piece of brown paper sac. Place the paper on the wax spot and iron the area gently. Do not use steam.

Often when people want to move their round rug to another room or spot they find that the furniture legs have left deep indentation where they crushed the fibers. Once more your clothes iron will rescue you. In this case you want to use the steam. Pass the iron over the marks, and let the steam raise the crushed fibers. Be careful if your rug is made with synthetic fibers as you could burn it easily if your iron is too hot.

Being the owner of a coffee maker is a great feeling. It means that that you get to enjoy a great cup of coffee, made especially the way you like it, in the comfort of your home or office, and without the high price tag attached. Now that you have made this important acquisition, it is time to consider what types of coffee maker accessories you will be needing or wanting.

When you begin to shop for the best coffee maker accessory, always remember to write down the specific make and model of you machine before heading out and making purchases. By completing this important preliminary step, you will not end up being stuff with appliances that do no fit or match your model, or do not offer optimal results.

Once you have determined what types of accessories will work optimally with your machine, you have a great deal of choices ahead of you. Some of the most popular coffee-related accessories on today’s market include the following: Espresso cups, grinders, filters and thermal filters, tamping mats, and many more. These products, as well as gourmet coffee beans, various sweeteners and syrups, and other gourmet items can be purchased on the internet, or at a local coffee shop that features an accessories section.

Additional accessories for coffee conoisseurs may include espresso making tools, and/or tools for making lattees. Consider steamers and frothers for mild, scoops to measure out specific amounts of coffee grinds, kettles, and so much more. Collecting coffee paraphernalia can become a passion and a labor of love.

For those individuals that are especially particular about their cup of morning joe, there exist some high-end coffee makers that will encorporate multiple tasks into one machine. Because these quality machines tend to reflect their multiple abilities and excellent products in their price, be sure to inquire about warranties and special features of several makes and models before committing to any one.

Other individuals may not be as specific about the type of coffee they drink, but the amount that they make on any given day. If you only need one cup of coffee per day, a single cup machine should be adequate. However, if you like to entertain, and offer coffee with dessert, you may consider having a larger capacity machine on hand for such occasions.

Regardless of the type, style, or price of your coffee maker, the various coffee maker accessories, as discussed above, will help to ensure that your cup of coffee is perfect every single time.

Getting Your Pantry Cabinets Organized

Posted in Cleaning

No matter how neat our pantry storage cabinets start out, eventually they look as though a tornado came through them. Nothing is organized and it is difficult to find things readily. Getting your pantries in order and easy and will make them not only look better, but will also make it simpler to find things.

Decide on a day and time to get organized. Give yourself a few hours and choose a time when there will be little or no interruptions. You may want to try and do this on a day when you will be alone so there are no distractions.

The best way to start is to actually take everything out. Stack things on the floor or a nearby countertop. During this time, you will likely find outdated products, items that you never use and things that were not sealed properly and are now stale. Just throw these things out.

After everything is out, give the pantry a full cleaning. A good anti-bacterial kitchen cleaner and a rag will do the trick. Spilled foods and oils are breeding grounds for germs. Also, if your trash pail has been stored in the pantry, you have probably ‘missed’ the pail a few times. Be sure to clean the floor well too.

Now you are ready to put all your goodies back inside. Start from the bottom up. The floor is a good place for heavy things like water jugs and soda bottles. Determine which items you use most frequently and put those on a shelf that is eye level. The top shelf will often be best for taller items, like cereal boxes. Place canned goods all together. If possible, create rows on the same thing. For example: a row of soups, a row of vegetables, and a row of tomato sauces. If space will allow, double stack the cans for better efficiency.

Things that come in packets, like soup and gravy mixes should go inside a plastic storage container to keep them together and prevent them from getting buried underneath larger products.

Organizing pantry cabinets sounds like a pain, but can actually be fun. You will love the convenience of finding things quickly and it will be more pleasant to look inside.

Let There Be Light-A Chandelier Lighting Guide

Posted in Interior Design

What more elegant way to set off a room than with a gorgeous, sparkling chandelier lighting fixture? While the concept may conjure up images of palaces, great dining halls and grand mansions, there are many different chandelier types and designs that will suit even a small room.

First, let us remember that the definition of a chandelier is simply a branched light fixture that hangs from the ceiling and has many bulbs. Whether it is an ultra modern Danish style with wood and brass or an old school crystal version with candelabra bulbs, chandelier lighting adds a little something special to a room.

Many think that a chandelier might be an energy suck, but that is not necessarily true. In recent years, companies such as Lamps Plus feature innovative products as the Possini Euro Design Energy Efficient Expo Chandelier. Other energy efficient chandelier lighting options are offered by GREENCulture, where you can find an modern look with equally current energy efficiency.

Okay, so you still want that elegant, sparkly, breathtaking and fantastic crystal chandelier but you are concerned about the environment. Take heart, you can enjoy the grandeur of glitter without sending your electric bill through the roof. You can rack up a 75% energy savings by replacing the standard incandescent decorative flame-shaped light bulbs with the new compact florescent bulbs. It’s true that they cost a bit more—okay about triple the price for a single bulb—but it is definitely worth it in the long run.

Whether you put first your budget, your aesthetic considerations or the impact of your style choice on the environment, you can find a chandelier that will not only suit your decor but put your mind at ease.

A chandelier light is meant to be used to illuminate a scene, a room, an object or situation that needs to be revealed. Use it well. Light up your life.

Replacing Kitchen Aid Parts And Kitchen Aid Attachments

Posted in Home Accessories

Name brand appliances undoubtedly do their job better then generic ones. In general, they last longer and have better output and performance. When you purchase a Kitchen Aid appliance, you know that it is a high quality product, and is sure to last you for years. As with any mechanical device, after regular usage, the appliance may need fixing. Kitchen Aid parts are easy to obtain, and are readily available to the consumer, as long as the model is still in production.

Take your food processor, for example. If one of your Kitchen Aid attachments broke or got lost, you do not have to go and buy a new machine, all you have to do call the company directly or go online to order the part that you need. In a large machine, like a washing machine or dryer, it is recommended to order professional help to fix the appliance and let them determine which part is needed. Opening a machine without prior knowledge of how it works can have unfortunate results.

When you order your new part, be sure to have the model number and make of the machine available so that you can get the proper part, as each model is made differently, and often the parts are not interchangeable. For instance, a beater that is made for the industrial mixer may not fit properly into the artisan mixer.

As always, proper upkeep of your appliance will ensure a longer life to the machine itself and to all of its parts. Be sure not to abuse the machine and only follow the regulations and guidelines in the owner’s manual. If you are contentious and careful with your machine, you can be assured that it will last, and the occasions to replace parts will be few and far between.

Choosing The Perfect Breakfast Bar

Posted in Interior Design

Do you feel that the dining table is not the most appropriate area to have your breakfast? Not to worry, a majority of people, myself included, feel the same way. I believe that the dining table should be reserved for more formal occasions when you have a bunch of people with whom to dine together.

So what is the alternative then? I would suggest eating at the kitchen counter. If this is not to your liking either and you have some spare space in your home, then you can consider investing in a furniture set which includes a breakfast bar and stools.

It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate and outrageously expensive. You can find a basic mission breakfast bar that sits 2 people for under $200. Of course, breakfast bars can come in a variety of designs so it is important to do your homework and research the available options, keeping in mind that practicality and aesthetic appeal are both essential factors.

Of course, you don’t have to purchase a breakfast bar set. You can instead choose to customize and purchase the bar and stools separately. As you are most likely aware of, there are several different styles you can have when it comes to wooden bar stools. The selection you make in some cases will have an impact on only the aesthetic appeal. With some of the other options, there will be a practical implication as well.

The one example I’ll focus my attention on in this article is the presence of backs. Wooden bar stools can come with backs or be backless. From an appearance point of view, the decision would be based on personal preference.

However, from a practical standpoint, the advantage of backs is that you would have a surface to lean against whilst sitting. Although backless wooden bar stools lack this feature, they can be more compact as a result.
