Factors to Consider When Gardening

Posted in Gardening

One of the major factors that have to be considered in planting and growing a vegetable garden is the climate, which greatly affects the conditions of the plants and vegetables. The climate is able to affect their growth and produce which all gardeners are depending on. Therefore, planning and learning the different factors that affect planting and harvesting like climate, soil conditions and such, is one of the key success in vegetable gardening.

Climate

Living in a state where the climate has a long winter season only allows for a limited time for planting and harvesting, considering that winter frost comes in early in such areas. Living in a state like Texas however is very ideal for gardeners. The climate in Texas has no long winter frost period which allows for extra long growing season, from spring to fall, even allows planting in late summer and getting a fall harvest. Having a Texas vegetable garden has become a favorite past time for most Texans, considering that they have one of the best weather conditions for planting, so much so that even those living in the city continue to grow vegetables, using small plots or containers in their homes which they place in their balconies and window sills. Some use community gardens as their vegetable gardens.

Lasagna Gardening

Most gardeners in Texas often use the lasagna method of gardening because of its easy no-dig, no-till way of gardening. It uses only organic or biodegradable materials such as kitchen scraps (vegetable, fruits peels and rinds, etc.) and garden scraps (dried leaves and straws, grass clippings, etc.), which can easily be collected in any household. They prefer to use organic compost as a safe alternative to chemical based fertilizers which are known to have very adverse effects to the environment and sometimes even to people. Organic composts are also useful and beneficial because they are natural and very eco-friendly. Not only that, they also provide for a more diverse eco-system that is useful for erosion control and as land fill cover used for wetland constructions and land and stream reclamations.
