Corner Cabinets Are Space Extenders

Most rooms have two or three corners that are vacant, especially a smaller room that may not have a lot of wall space on all sides. Homeowners who want to add a decorative touch to a room should consider the beauty and usefulness that corner cabinets supply. Corner cabinets have long been popular solutions for a room that looks empty but has limited wall space, and many traditional, early American styles exist. They add decorative storage space, many of them large and offering some shelves behind cabinet doors, others open to display books or treasures. They are frequently popular as a way to display collectibles in an elegant way. A larger one fits perfectly in a good-sized room to supply a lot of storage room for books; and a small one can hold an entire collection of miniatures or figurines. Homeowners who feel the need to make an improvement or find ways to store or display items should examine each room and think about what items would appropriately be stored or displayed there. Then they can see if there are unused corners that can be used for corner cabinet furniture without overcrowding the area.

Many cabinets are 60 to 72 inches, creating an impressive piece of furniture in a compact space. A corner spot near the front door or the hall leading to the bedrooms could be perfect spot. Two corners on either side of the wall with a fireplace could be perfect, with decorations or storage appropriate for a family room theme. Bathrooms are a popular spot for corner cabinets that are hung in the corner. They supply badly needed additional storage space and leave the floor space free to give a more open feel. A corner storage cabinet is perfect for the garage, giving extra storage room to keep items safe, while staying well out of the way of cars and other items stored there.

Some homes do not have a closet near the front door to store items commonly needed coming in and out. If there is an unused corner by the exit, a corner unit could supply a home to umbrellas, gloves, lunches for the day, car keys and all the other items that need a special spot to sit so they can be found when needed. In a smaller dining room, a beautifully finished corner cabinet with glass doors can safely store and display the home’s fine china set, and include cabinets to store the tablecloths, fancy trivets, cloth napkins, napkin rings and special silverware used for special occasions. Ones near the bathroom entrance can store all the towels and supplies for the bath, saving room inside the bathroom if space there is limited. In addition to beautiful pieces of wood furniture, some corner cabinets are crafted of metals such as wrought iron, sitting on curved legs with glass shelves supported by curved and scrolled iron, perhaps painted white, creating a very open and lovely way to display dainty collectibles.

The measurements should be taken from the corner out along the side of the wall, and measuring should also include testing how far the corner unit will project from the wall to ensure it is not going to interfere with the path of opening and closing doors or foot traffic. Then the true pleasure is shopping. Buyers should take their time so they have a chance to consider all the many beautiful possibilities, and look at some examples of how they have been used by decorators in home decorating magazines. They can then decide if they want a simple Shaker or an ornate, intricately carved and decorative Victorian style cabinet; a large one with frosted glass windows for the dining room or a sturdy stainless steel one for the garage. Shopping is half the fun.

The other half of the fun is enjoying the beauty and extra storage room, or the ability to finally see and enjoy those beautiful collectibles all displayed together. The perfect corner cabinet has already been made to put in that corner.
