Safety Concerns For Single Duvet Covers

Sadly, too many consumers overlook safety concerns when buying products for use at home.  Duvets and single duvet covers are no exception.  This is especially true in tough economic times when the price of a super sale captivates the eye regardless of the product’s safety.   The safety of  duvet covers should be considered much the same way as when you’re buying other products such as tools or even a car.  Two of the biggest safety concerns when buying single duvet covers are children’s safety and also making sure that the duvet cover is fire resistant.

There are safety concerns you should be aware of when caring for a duvet and single duvet covers.  First, duvets made of natural materials which include the fill and the exterior shell should be drycleaned.  The only exception would be if the the duvet is made of synthetic polyester (including the outer shell and the duvet cover).  They can be cleaned in a washing machine, however, you cannot put them in a dryer afterwards.  They need to placed on a clothesline or any clean surface for drying.  The next concern is to checking all fabrics on the duvet and the duvet cover to make sure they are fire resistant.  The duvet should have a safety tag on it which would tell you if the fabric is fire resistant. If the safety tag is not on the duvet, check if the packing slip has that information on it.  You can also check with the department or store sales representative who may be able to tell you about the safety features of the products you’re buying.  If shopping online, that information should already be available on the website.

The second safety concern has to do with children.  First, it’s recommended that infants and children under the age of one not be covered with duvets.  That obviously means you won’t need a duvet cover for them.  One of the big concerns with young children and duvets is that they may get overheated when covered with a duvet and cause harm or sickness.  The other concern is that the fire resistant chemicals can cause allergies or poisoning if they chew on the fabric.

When it comes to safety, it only takes a few minutes to find all this out.  You’ll have less to think about when you buy single duvet covers and start using them at home.
