How to Design a House with Your Spouse

February 20, 2011 · Posted in Interior Design · Comment

Designing a house with a loved one can really be a little bit difficult at times. You may each have attachments to furniture pieces that just don’t go together very well. You can find ways to make all of your favorite pieces work together and get wall colors that you can both agree on whether it’s kitchen door handles or shabby chic bedding.

If you are doing DIY projects this can be a huge source of contention. You might just want to have a project manager. This is going to be where one of you is in charge of project. It allows one person to carry out their vision. However, the next time they’re going to have to really listen to your thoughts and feelings when you are the project manager.

One conflict that you’re really going to see a lot of is going to be your furniture. You might have some delicate glass end tables that you really love. Your husband may have a black leather recliner that he just won’t get rid of because it is so comfortable. These pieces may initially just seem very mismatched and they generally are. You can find ways to work around this. For instance you could just paint the base of the tables in a black tone and then add a trendy damask print throw blanket to your leather chair.

Wall colors can also be a source of contention. You may want more of a feminine cottage look with pale lavender’s or even rose tones. Your spouse may just think that this is too feminine and he wants a more dramatic gray tone. You can compromise just by going with one color for the walls and another color for the furniture. Then you can find window treatments that are going to use both of these tones together for the perfect marriage of masculine and feminine elements.

Modern Design and the Canopy Bed

May 5, 2010 · Posted in Interior Design · Comment

Am I the only one who thinks the words “minimalist” and “canopy bed” just don’t really hang together? I wish they did, really I do, but I just don’t see how all those swishy drapes and heavy velvets are going to lend themselves to a minimalist theme. However you try telling that to my friend Sophie. She runs a website that is designed as a canopy bed guide and I have to say that on the whole she really knows her stuff. We’ve even employed her to do some decorating and interior design in our house, but I have to disagree here on this idea of a simple minimal canopy bed. She says you don’t need all the curtains etc and I say then it isn’t much of a canopy bed is it.

I think it’s hilarious the way designers adapt all kinds of popular furniture so that you can shoehorn it into a modern setting. All over the world now you can check into a hotel and find a four poster bed that has…wait for it… four posts but nothing else! Somewhere along the line somebody decided that, while clients love the romance of a canopy bed, hanging an actual canopy was too much of a hassle. Basically I imagine it’s too much of a hassle to clean and look after.

Now I’m not advocating a return to those enormous beds that are about ten foot wide by ten foot high with huge thick velvet curtains covering all sides. Those beds were built like that for a reason, to keep dust and rubbish off the bed and for warmth. Today we have central heating and vacuum cleaners thank you very much. However some kind of decorative light and airy canopy would be attractive and make sense of having the four posts. I’m all for modern design as long as it makes some sort of sense.

Some Key Tips to Designing a Bathroom

April 23, 2010 · Posted in Bathroom, Interior Design · Comment

The bathroom may be the most important room to design in all of your home, both for you and your guests. It is a room that your health depends on and good bathroom design in crucial.

How much you are able to design the bathroom depends greatly on your budget. If you are part of the process of designing your own home, then you can make it however you want, strategically placing the windows and tub to suit your desires. If you are starting from scratch, make sure that your tub is big enough for you to stretch out in. You will want a vanity that has enough cabinet space for everything you will be using on a daily basis. Remember functionality along with beauty. This will be a place that you spend a lot of time in and you do not want to later regret your decisions.

If you are going back in to remodel a bathroom that has already been constructed, you will be more limited in what you can do. Most likely, you can not move the toilet, but the changes you make will be cosmetic changes. They will make a big difference to your overall bathroom design.

Changing the wall color of your bathroom will give it an instant lift. A new color scheme will make it look like a new room. You may also want to focus on cabinetry. Cabinetry that is dated or just inconvenient is often what inspires people to redesign their bathroom in the first place. If this is true for you, replacing just the doors will change the whole look. If you have the money, you can have the whole vanity replaced, even getting a more modern looking sink.

When looking at a bathroom remodeling project, there are two keys to remember. First, you should be true to your own style. You will be spending the most time in there, so make sure it is something you like, not something you are convinced to like. Second, beware of fads that will soon look dated. Interior design goes through phases. Do not make it obvious what phase your bathroom was designed in. Make it instead a timeless room.

Living Room Style on a Budget

If you would love a designer living room but you don’t have a designer budget to match then you need to be careful about what you buy. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your budget.

1. Use Budget Store Sofas

With the budget ranges sold in large furniture stores you can now buy sofas with good design at a reasonable price but you do have to be careful about what you purchase. The best furniture buys from these stores are generally plain neutral styles which do not give the game away about where you purchased your furniture. In any case, colored and patterned fabrics at low prices are likely to lack the depth and intensity of color that you will find in high end ranges. Colored furniture will look low budget as well as costing little.

2. Dress Up Your Budget Store Buys

Add more unusual and luxurious throws and cushions to your budget store purchases to add style without breaking the bank on the furniture itself.

3. Use Plenty of Fabric in Window Treatments

With curtains and valances do not skimp on fabric. It is better to have plenty of a cheaper fabric than look like you have not been able to afford a full curtain. With fuller fabric the curtains will hang much better. You can always decorate cheaper fabric with beading or braid to add the designer touch to plain window valances and curtains.

4. Stain Wooden furniture

Give new cheap wooden furniture a uniform look by staining it with the same shade of wood color. This also helps to tone down cheap pine which is often too orange in color.

5. Coordinate Colors

If you are stuck with a motely collection of old furniture, paint it in one shade to give it a uniform look. If you have a group of disparate sofas and chairs cover them in the same fabric or use coordinating cushions.

6. Buy Less

Sometimes it is better to make do with less furniture rather than to fill your living room with cheap buys. Buy one or two essential pieces and pay a bit more rather than fill your room with furniture you do not really like. You can always add more pieces when you get more funds.

Select Flooring for Your Conservatory

December 7, 2009 · Posted in Interior Design · Comment

A conservatory adds a wonderful extra space full of light to a home. If you are lucky enough to have one be sure to put together a careful plan to furnish it to make it look its best.

You probably have some ideas about how you want your conservatory to look and how you will use it and that will have an effect on how you plan your room layout and furniture. Be sure to include flooring in your ideas so that it is not just an afterthought. Here are a few tips on getting the flooring right:-

Hard Flooring

Conservatories are generally filled with plants and water will inevitably drip onto the floor at some point. This means that a hard waterproof tiled floor is the most sensible option. Carpet is really not suitable for a conservatory in any case as it simply looks out of place and it would soon get dirty as there is such close access to the outside. Remember however that even if you conservatory is made of hardwood, a wooden floor is probably not the best option as it is easily damaged by water spills. If you want your conservatory to have a comfortable feel add a shag rug which can be lifted and shaken outside to remove any dirt and grit or vacuumed regularly.

Type of Home

If your home is in town you may want a smart sophisticated conservatory floor such as one made of travertine or marble tile. If you have a country home on the other hand terracotta look tiles would fit in better. Some natural flooring such as slate tiles would look good in either town or country and the style of conservatory would then be dictated by the furniture and accessories you choose.

Color

It is better to choose a neutral color for your flooring and make it blend into the background and then add color with your other furnishings and accessories. A conservatory floor in a bright color would seem to take over the whole room and it would not look balanced so remember to choose a neutral tone when you are buying. If you do this it also means that you will more easily be able to change color schemes in later years.

Add Personality To Your Home With Wall Quotes

December 7, 2009 · Posted in Interior Design · Comment

Sometimes, the perfect decorative items for your walls are tricky to come by. Even though there are countless options, several types of wall decorations are either too expensive or do not perform agreeably with other objects within the room.

Quotes on walls are the best way out of this quandary and more and more people are using them to embellish their homes.

By showcasing principles and beliefs that are essential to yourself, quotes on walls make your living place more special and warm. Equally, vinyl decal imagery provide pleasing and modern visuals that alter any room into something even more spirited and up to date.

Restricting yourself to the specific models that can be found in mailing order catalogs is not required : it is simple to offer your own tailored designs to decal stores and get a unique object of decoration for your room.

High quality vinyl decals are slim and don’t have a see-through outline which may be noticed wasily. Most people will appreciate vinyl adhesives which appear as though they had been hand painted.

Vinyl decals do not only look stunning, they can also be peeled away at any time you want without injuring the walls or surfaces they stayed on. Several kinds of vinyl decals can be reused and it will be workable to apply them to different surfaces as time goes by.

Given their adaptability, wall decals are perfect to decorate interiors for unique celebrations in the vein of birthday anniversaries or baby showers. They communicate a sense of meaning to these influential times of life.

Decals are often a sensation with children that love to modify the décor of their room as they become older. It will then be practical for you to change the backdrop in their room just as their preferences change.

Given that there are so many different decals on the market, it is entirely possible to create a gorgeous wall decor at an inexpensive cost. Allow your originality to thrive and there is no threshold to what you can realize with wall decals for your decor!
