Tips on Using A Stained Glass Lamp in Your Decor
When Tiffany lamps were first launched back in the late 1800s, they were considered to be very formal lighting fixtures that only the very well-off could afford to decorate their homes with. Today, anyone on any kind of budget can afford to brighten up their decor with luminescent lighting fixtures made from stained glass in a rainbow of colors. Here’s how to get started.
Stained glass lamps come in many colors these days that weren’t found in the originals, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find one that complements your current color scheme. There are a few ways to go about this: you can either blend it in with your existing shades, or choose something that really contrasts so that it becomes a focal point of the room.
There’s no need at all to match the colors in a stained glass lamp to your room, but you will want to pay attention to the how the colors and the patterns combine to complement your decor. If you already have lots of colorful patterns in your room, you will want to look at Tiffany style lamps that feature only two or three colors in more subdued shades. As well, if the room already has a lot of color in it, you will want to highlight the lamp in a place of honor so that it becomes a distinctive feature all its own.
On the other hand, if your room is decorated in a neutral palette, you can really be bold with your stained glass lamp. Consider adding more than one; perhaps a table lamp and a swag, or a floor lamp and a couple of wall sconces. This way you’ll be able to enjoy even more of the vibrant colors and shimmering lights of your fixture while adding pizazz to a room that may be bordering on boring.
Creating a sophisticated looking bedroom
There are three elements that contribute to interior design and these are the décor of a room i.e. the finishes of the wall and floors, the lighting of a room and finally the furniture in a room. You therefore will not be surprised to learn that these three principles also apply when revamping your bedroom.
The Décor
Getting the decor right is something of a personal choice but you will often be sublimely influenced by what is happening around you. A few years ago minimalist and bright and airy rooms were very popular. Now, however you will find that darker and more ornate looking interiors are more common. Rich dark colours contrasted with some lighter hues make a wonderful choice of colour for any room but particularly the bedroom as they create a feeling of sanctuary and warmth.
The Lighting
When the sun sets you want to be able to create the right sort of mood lighting, and the way to do this is to have multiple sources of light in your bedroom. Use a floor standing lamp, a couple of bedside lights and fit a dimmer to your main ceiling light and you can create the perfect ambience. Creating a sophisticated lighting scheme does not have to be difficult just think about how you can get various types of light in to your bedroom.
The Furniture
There are a few pieces of furniture that are necessary in the bedroom – such as a bed – but there are many others that you may not think of that will help to create an air of sophistication. Chairs in the bedroom often give a hotel feeling, you will find that bedroom chairs are slightly smaller than regular arm chairs but they do still take up a lot of space. If you have the space though I would highly recommend getting one as it will improve the look of your room significantly. Replacing an old bedside unit with a contemporary glass table will also help to enhance the look of your room.
Creating a sophisticated bedroom is simple if you adhere to these principles you can transform a bland and boring looking room in to something that is really quite special. You don’t even have to spend the earth doing it – keep an eye out in charity shops and ebay for lighting and furniture – you would be surprised at what you can find.
Proper Bathroom Lighting
Most bathrooms do not have enough lighting for me. As I get older I need more light to make sure that my makeup is applied correctly and my clothes are straight and ironed. In updating your bathroom please take time to consider the effects of proper bathroom lighting.
One of my favorite styles I am seeing in bathrooms is the addition of sconces. The gentle light cast from the sides helps to fill in the light where other bathroom lighting is lacking. Recessed lighting is fine for overall illumination and is certainly needed as part of your lighting package. Pendant lights are another great feature and add some art and style to your bathroom decor. Make sure that you pay attention to the finishes on all of your fixtures since mixing chrome, stainless steel and oil rubbed bronze might not look very finished or high end.
Pendant lights can be hung a different levels, make sure and measure the correct height for placement so that it is not shining in your eyes but is beneficial for your overall effect. I have some pendant lights that it is easy to change out the globe should I ever want to change the color scheme in my master bathroom. Which I think is coming soon. I change up my bathroom decor every couple of years. It keeps everything fresh looking without breaking my budget.
My decorative mirrors are mounted on the wall making change out easy. I use to have the large one piece mirror and that was ok, I did update the mirror to a more sophisticated look by gluing some framing around it to make it look a little more like a high end bathroom instead of a builder grade install. It was simple to do, I just went to my local hardware store and picked out the molding, cut it to size, painted it, and attached it with a glue. Check with your local store to get the correct glue for attaching wood to a mirror.
